The National Survey of Family Growth included a poll of 2,767 teens. Their responses showed an increase in acceptance of babies born outside of marriage. There was slightly higher condom use among males – up from 71 percent in 2002 to 81 percent.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), American teens are using the rhythm method of birth control. This would account for the recent rise in teen pregnancy numbers.

The Kansas City Star says, “The results, released Wednesday by the National Center for Health Statistics, found that 17 percent of 15- to 19-year-olds (sexually active or not) used periodic abstinence, or the calendar rhythm method, as a form of contraception in the period from 2006 to 2008. In 2002, 11 percent of teens used that method.”

The rhythm method has a high failure rate. Better sexual preparedness for teens has always been important. In this case it may be lacking all together. Parenthood has its frustrating moments, but it’s an easier challenge for those with more resources and experience.
