Former Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala dead

Koirala was Prime Minister of Nepal 4 times from 1991 to 1994, 1998 to 1999, 2000 to 2001and from 2006 to 2008.

Huge number of his supporters assembled outside his daughter’s house after he was taken there from hospital where he was for several days.

Mr Koirala’s political career spanned 7 decades.

Koirala’s body will be placed at the national stadium on Sunday for a last glimpse to the public, his funeral will be later in the day at the Pashupatinath Hindu temple in Kathmandu.

Indian Prime Minister R. Manmohan Singh has expressed his deep condolences.

“Koirala spent his entire political life championing the cause of the people…” “Koirala was a mass leader and a statesman, whose knowledge and wisdom guided the polity of Nepal in the right direction at critical junctures in the country’s history.” Mr Singh said.
