As posted on 1000 Green Steps, according to the National Weather Service, this weekend a major winter storm will strike Massachusetts with about 6-8 inches of snow intensity in Boston and 20 inches intensity in some areas of Cape Cod. In Boston, snow will begin at about 9 p.m. Saturday and continue into late Sunday morning. Winds could reach up to 35 miles per hour in the city during the brunt of the storm from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, said Weather Service meteorologist Charlie Foley. The weather service has issued a blizzard watch for southeastern Massachusetts from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. High winds and snow falling at 1 to 2 inches per hour could create whiteout conditions for at least three hours in Plymouth and Barnstable Counties, the forecasters said.

The highest accumulations, 12 to 20 inches, are predicted for the areas at the bottom of the Cape: Plymouth, Bourne, Sandwich, Mashpee, andFalmouth . Farther up the Cape, towns such as Harwich and Brewster could also see upwards of a foot of snow. The snow could even be accompanied by thunder and lightning. The North Shore and Boston’s western suburbs should get 6 to 8 inches. Central Massachusetts is also looking at 4 inches, while the Berkshires may not see snow at all, forecasters said.

“There’s still a lot of uncertainty. We use seven to 13 models and there’s not a lot of agreement on this storm,” Foley said. “If it tracks farther north, we’re looking at higher accumulations; if tracks farther east, it could go out to sea. But right now, this is the best bet.”
