Chinese Tennis star, Na Li and her Russian counterpart, Maria Sharapova will play the championship match of the Italian Open 2012 in Rome. The match will take place at center court on May 20 after the women doubles final and preceding the mens singles final.

Sharapova is the defending champion at the event. The second seed player defeated German player Angelique Kerber in straight sets to qualify for the final. Sharapova had the match in her control throughout the semifinal. Her strong baseline shots were just too much for the 12th seed Kerber. Sharapova has 27 winners against Kerber’s 9 with almost the same number of unforced errors.
Sharapova’s opponent in the final, Na Li is the current French Open champion. The French Open is the most respected clay tournament in the world. Italian Open comes in after that. Na Li’s entry into the final came after her semifinal opponent, Serena Williams was unable to complete the match due to lower back injury.
In head-to-head matches between the pair, Sharapova leads by six to four. However, in the more recent encounters, the Chinese has a far better record. She has won four of the last five matches played between her and Sharapova.
Similarly, Sharapova’s recent record on clay is very impressive. She has won three of the last five clay titles she has played in. However, she has never won the French Open and it remains the only grand slam title missing from her trophy cabinet.
