Federer, Sharapova advance; Jankovic upset in US Open 2010
Maria Sharapova dismissed Beatrice Capra of the U.S. 6-0 6-0 but that
was after 4th seed Jelena Jankovic was upset by Kaia Kanepi, seed no.
31. The windy conditions on Arthur Ashe stadium meant that the Serbian
Jankovic couldn’t control the ball and the play much and she eventually
bowed out of the Slam in straight sets 6-2 7-6(1).
Roger Federer beat Paul-Henri Mathieu for the 5th time in 5 meetings to enter the 2nd week of the US Open 2010 for the 10th straight year. He beat the Frenchman 6-4 6-3 6-3 and will meet Jurgen Melzer in the Round of 16.

Federer and Melzer have played just once before, in this year’s Wimbledon where the former no. 1 prevailed in straight sets. Incidentally that too was in the Rd. of 16.
Joining Federer in the 4th round stage were challengers Novak Djokovic and Robin Soderling. Djokovic quelled the challenge of local man James Blake in straight sets 6-1 7-6(4) 6-3 while Soderling also had an easy win to enter the next stage. The Swede is slated to meet Federer at the Quarter-Final stage.
