Although Blues’ caretaker boss, Roberto Di Matteo has other goals in sight, including the FA Cup (final against Liverpool on May 5) and the Champions League (final against Bayern Munich on May 19) , today’s clash has been labelled the most important at the moment.
The Italian said that he was not thinking about the other games as yet and that he first wanted to ensure Chelsea’s qualification for next year’s Champions League. He added that this game will effect their strategy for the Saturday clash with Liverpool.
Chelsea defenders, Luiz and Cahill will miss the match due to hamstring injuries. However, Di Matteo was confident about their fitness for the Champions League final.
The magpies are also eyeing the Champions League qualification for next year. But they suffered a heavy setback in the form of a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Wigan on Saturday. That result allowed Spurs to jump in front of Newcastle at third spot on points table. It also enabled Chelsea to close the points gap to one point so late in the season.
Newcastle’s head, Alan Pardew said that his team will play for pride that was somewhat lost on Saturday. He said that the chances Champions League football returning to St. James’ Park might have distracted his team against Wigan but they’ll play with a different mentality against Chelsea.
