US and Asian Engineering Gap
Carnegie Mellon announced the unveiling of a statue of their first engineering PhD graduate.
The man commemorate is Mao Yisheng who returned to China to design two famous bridges, Beijing’s Great Hall of the People and new engineering studies.
Asians are still distinguishing themselves from their US counterparts. Frank Wu, dean of Wayne State law school says this is because Asians are willing to work hard, do the extra math and apply themselves to the physical sciences.
It could also be because the US is outnumbered….in science fairs. Last year, the US had about 50,000 kids participate in science fairs, compared to more than 6 million in China alone!
The gap is likely to continue to grow unless American parents encourage their kids to get back into math and sciences. And the best way to do that…is to lead by example.
What do you think?
