Police Pledge Beijing Will Be Drug Free by 2008 Games
In 1839, one of China's national heroes, Lin Zexu, destroyed 1.19 millon kg of opium at Humen beach in an effort to show that China was going to fight foreign smuggled opium.
168 years later to the day, two police officers dressed in hazmat suits threw 135 kg of drugs in the Beijing Cement Plant to be burned.
The message – Beijing will be rid of drugs before the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
Beijing claims that all entertainment venues are free of drugs. And, believe it or not, nobody is saying elsewise.![]()
So far this year, police have cracked 542 drug-related crimes and seized 614 suspects as well as 60 kg of drugs…11%, 9% and 25% increases respectively.
The police's best friend…labrador dogs deployed at airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations to focus on migrants bringing in drugs.
I wonder if the police will be going after banned sports supplements as well…then we really could have a clean Olympics, no?


Beijing is still rife with drugs. Cocaine, and “head shake pills” can easily be had on Beijing’s main bar street. Sold by foreign dealers.
