Olympic Torch Lit by Sun Rays
The kindling of the flame for the Olympic torch symbolizes the purity of the Olympic flame.
On March 24th a concave mirro will be used to focus the rays of the sun to light the torch and a back-up fire in case the pure wind or rain gods decide to snuff the torch out along the way.
The flame will be handed to BOCOG at 3pm on March 30th in Panathenian Stadium in Athens. After that, the flame will fly to Beijing for a reception on March 31st.
Then…a global tour to 135 cities around the world beginning on April 1st.
The relay will cover 137K kilometers in 130 days before arriving back in Beijing on August 8, 2008 at 8:08pm.
21,780 people will handle the torch along its route which included the summit of Mount Qomolangma – Mt. Everest.
Artemis Ignatiou is the choreographer for the flame-lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia.
BOCOG will reap the windfall the torch relay generates.
