Food Safety Checks for Beijing Olympics Begin During Olympic Trials

Submitted by Bill Belew on Thursday, 12 July 2007No Comment

China will start its daily food safety reports next month during test events for the 2008 Olympic trials.

The aim, of course, is to reassure the world that the food is safe.

I don't know what the fuss is all about….one official already said that Chinese food is 99% safe.

What are there…about 3,000 athletes that come? That means only about 30 of them will get sick or perhaps served cardboard filled dumplings.

"Officials have vowed that the Beijing Games, a source of tremendous national pride, will be part of the crackdown on unsafe food."

The last thing the country needs is to have athletes come down with the belly ache

from something they ate.

My bet is that the athletes will bring their own food.

I helped an American national team on a visit to Japan one summer. Japanese water is great…totally. Still…the whole team brought their own bottled water or sent someone out to buy it.

I hope China doesn't take it personally if the athletes avoid the restaurants…especially the dim sum.
