Beijing Plans to Force Rain Ahead of Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games
China's economy is going great guns. No argument.
China is number one on a lot of fronts…a whole lot of fronts…most this, biggest that, oldest that…
But, can Beijing control the weather, too?
According to the Beijing Meteorological Bureau, there is a 50% chance of rain for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Summer games starting on August 8,2008 and ending two weeks later.![]()
The agency is drafting plans "for the artificial rain mitigation for the opening and closing ceremonies."
Beijing is going to try to force the rain laying claim to having done it in the past.
"When conditions permit, we will artificially increase rainfall."
Last year Beijing claimed to have created an artificial rainfall to clear the air and streets after a dust storm.
It was done by – firing "seven rocket shells containing 163 cigarette-size sticks of silver iodide over the city's skies, which they claimed forced four-tenths of an inch (one centimeter) of rain."
The U.S. National Academy of Sciences calls the science behind it "too weak."
For the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, the meterologists chose the least rained on day (October 10th) in history to start the games. It didn't rain.
Do you think Beijing can control the weather?
