7 Steps Beijing Has Taken to Improve the Environment Leading up to the 2008 Games

Submitted by Bill Belew on Friday, 1 June 2007No Comment

Beijing's Vice Mayor says the capital city's environment has improved.

The city has shelled out nearly $16 billion (120 billion yuan) to make changes n the environment.

As a result:

1. The number of good quality air days has increased from just 100 in 1998 to 241 in 2006. I wonder what they are doing for air the other 120 some days.

2. Water quality has remained stable while emissions standards of major pollutants has declined.beijing.2008.games.jpg

3. The reliance on clean energies has increased – 300 million cubic meters of natural gas was consumed in 1998. It is now more than 15 times that, meaning less coal is used.

4. 2,580 buses are headed for the bus pile.

5. 5,000 taxis are headed for the heap.

6. 90% of waste water and 95% of solid waste in its eight cored districts will be treated.

7. During the Games, factories will be shut down, and some will be forbidden to do groundwork.

Why does it take something like the games before a country will realize its need to something to improve the environment?
