10 Industrial Polluters Shut Down to Freshen Air
Beijing's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) has an agenda.
Cut sulfur dioxide and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in China by 6% and 5% respectively this year from '05 levels, in time for the 2008 Olympics.
10 big polluters – cement, steel and chemical plants, have been shut down.
More closings this year are promised.
Results are visible, sorta –
"Beijing experienced 22 "blue sky" days, or days with fairly good air quality, in January. That was the best run of clear days since the year 2000, though persistent cold air was also cited as a major factor to keep the air clear. "
Persistent cold air… hmm… Is that any relative to global warming?
