How Do You Say Japan? Let Me Count the Ways.

Submitted by Bill Belew on Wednesday, 5 April 2006No Comment

In ancient times, Japan was referred to as "Toyoashiharamizuho no kuni" and "Ashiharanakatsu kuni". And if you can remember that, you will probably get some question right on a test IF you can read the question.

The Chinese call Japan Nihon-koku presumably because Japan exists near the sun. Hence the rising sun.

In 1934, the Ministry of Education’s Provisional Deliberation Council on the Japanese Language designated Nippon as the official name.

Postage stamps use Nippon and Japanese athletes sent overseas often wear uniforms emblazoned with Nippon. It can be said that Nippon is the official name.

So where, did the word Japan come from?
