Asians Shop Till They Drop

Submitted by Bill Belew on Wednesday, 30 January 2008No Comment

Asian visitors to Japan shop til they drop, according to results of a September 2007 shopping trends survey by the Japan Department Stores Association.

Backed up by the data, department stores, seeing dwindling sales to residents, are stepping up efforts to target foreign shoppers.

Tourists from China increased after the Japanese government stopped banning group tourist visas for Chinese in 2005. Since then, the number of Chinese visitors has dramatically increased.

Some department stores offer sales assistance in Chinese.

Other offers to Asian tourists at some department stores:

–  accepting the Chinese " Yinlian" credit card
–  5-percent discount coupons to foreign visitors who present a passport
–  bilingual sales clerks
