Japan to Give India a Lesson in Protection of IPRs Learned in China
A 20-member delegation from Japan is heading to India to teach New Delhi some of the lessons Tokyo learned in China.
Toyota Motor Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., and Canon Inc.among others as well as officials from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) are heading to India to press New Delhi to step up efforts to crack down on piracy and counterfeiting of Japanese products.
The public-private mission hopes to pre-empt problems that have already happened in China.
The group will be:
1. asking for tougher regulations to be imposed
2. sharing know-how for recognizing counterfeit products
3. investigating the extent of the problem
A similar group went to China in 2002 and has already returned five times.
It's the first time for India.
Should India be happy for the attention?
Japanese companies estimate they jave lost Y10 trillion ($800 billion) due to counterfeiting, IPR violations so far.
Japan, the U.S. and Europe are working together on the crackdown issue.
