Shanghai GM takes top Sales honor in China
Shanghai GM beat two Chinese joint ventures of Volkswagen AG to win top spot in sales for 2006.
GM sold 413,367 cars, up 23% from 2005 and 60,000 more than Shanghai VW and FAW VW.
GM was selling its Lova and Aveo at 6,000 units a month for the first half of last year. Then, VW's new Polo and Honda's Fit drove up. Sales dropped….but not enough to keep from GM from winning the crown.![]()
GM has cut the price of its Lova and Aveo economy sedans by 5,000 – 9,900 yuan ($625-1200) or 65 and 10% of the total price in hopes of gaining a price advantage in the compact car segment of China.
That will make future buyers happy but last year's buyers screaming for a rebate.
GM should enjoy the lead while they can. It's just a matter of time before VW, Honda and soon Toyota dethrones them.
