Save Tibet! – From the Tourists

Submitted by Bill Belew on Thursday, 7 June 2007No Comment

There will be a new battle cry – Save Tibet from the Tourists!

I reckon if the Chinese government doesn't let the country have its way, the tourists are sure to have their way with the country.

Tibet hopes to have as many as 6 million tourists in the year 2010, twice the number of visitors as it will have this year.

If so, the country will rack up about 6 billion yuan ($770 million) in tourism income, abt 12% of the region's GDP.

The Tibetan government will in turn be able to spend more money to promote more tourists. Do they know what they are getting into?qinghai.tibet%2Crailway.jpg

Since the completion of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in July 1st of last year, the region has seen a surge in tourist arrivals…and income.

2.5 million tourists came, 154,800 from overseas and spent 2.77 billion yuan.

In the first four months of this year, Tibet has received 198,000 tourists, up 30%.

During China's recent Golden Week – 340,000 people made the trip.

And…believe it or not, the region wants more tourists to come.
