Rent-a-Air Raid Shelter

Submitted by Bill Belew on Tuesday, 12 June 2007No Comment

Chongqing has finally found a good use for the air raid shelters that were built during the days China feared a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union or the United States.

The city spent about 500,000 yuan ($65K) refurbishing the shelters, adding tables and benches, water and book stand to accomodate the poor, those who can't afford air conditioning at home.

Too hot?!

It gets up to 40C (104F) in Chongqing also known as 'the furnace'.air-raid.shelter.jpg

People, up to 10,000 of them, can go hang out in the shelters.

Money making activities will be banned.

"Yo, Wang! It's really cooking today, ain't it?"

"Un. Let's go underground. Hanging out with 100s of other people in a small hole has got to be cooler than this."
