National Standards on MP3 Players Forthcoming

China's MIT, Ministry of Information Industry, is expected to issue national standards for portable digital players by the end of the year.

China has about 1,000 MP3 player makers. 

Upon inspection 22 of 33 MP3 players were found to be defective – have poor sound quality and/or unsafe power adapters.

Two thirds! Quality is sacrificed to reduce costs and grab market share…no mystery there. However, Beijing wants tighter controls and more stringent standards applied to the 100 million MP3 players that are produced in China…half

of which get exported.mp3.player.china.gif

China can indeed do things more cheaply…but too often at the expense of quality.
