Microsoft Will Open Source Code to China

Posted by Bill Belew on August 2nd, 2007 in Doing Business in China | No Comments

Microsoft Corp says it will open some of the source codes of its products to the Chinese government.

Reason – to help China improve risk estimation on its software range.

The China Information Technology Security Certification Center will "use authorized codes and related information to test the security level of the company'smicrosoft.china.jpg products."

First up – Windows Vista. Windows XP, Window Server 2003 series and Microsoft Office applications are also

included in the authorized list.

Companies in China are asking the government to drop Microsoft to reduce security risks to their computers.

I guess I am not smart enough to know how MS's dominance of operating systems poses a threat to securty and caused the rise of open source code.

Wouldn't open source code be more of a threat than one that only MS can understand?

Can somebody help me here?
