Mattel Apologizes to China

Posted by Bill Belew on September 21st, 2007 in Doing Business in China | No Comments

Mattel apologized to China for the inconvenience it has caused Chinese consumers from recalling millions of China-made toys and pledged to take responsiblity.

It turns out that the recalls were because of design flaws rather than manfacturing errors.

OOPS!

Mattel recalled 17.4 million toys because of loose magnets and 2.2 million because of impermissible lead levels.

Follow up inspections confirmed that the toys complied with U.S. standards.mattel.toys.china.apology.jpg

"Gosh, China…we are sorry that we did unmeasurable damage to your reputation and it was really our fault and not yours. Uh….how much do we owe you to make it good?"

What the &%ยค is Mattel doing “apologizing to China”?? I find it extremely unlikely that the use of lead paint was caused by a Mattel design decision. I believe that Mattel was either blackmailed or bribed into making this humiliating apology. That is the Chinese way, saving face at any cost. They want to scapegoat Mattel for their widespread production quality and food safety problems.

Did you notice, the very next day after this “apology” taking blame, thousands of Chinese made baby cribs were recalled? I suppose some Chinese official will try to blame that on a foreign “design flaw” as well. The corruption situation in China is laughable.
