Macao Catching Hong Kong in Popularity

Submitted by Bill Belew on Monday, 1 October 2007No Comment

Macao may catch Hong Kong soon in terms of the number of mainland tourists.

Macao is getting a growing number of tourists and is enriching its tourism facilities.

From 1999-2004, annual growth in visitors to Macao grew by over 30%.

Last year, Macao saw 14.6% growth to Hong Kong's 8.4% growth.

Some 11.99 million people went to Macao…13.50 million went to Hong Kong.

Just 10 years ago, Hong Kong was getting four times as many visitors as its neighbor, Macao.

It used to be that people had to travel through Hong Kong to get to Macao.

Macao has:

1. expanded its airport

2. built the Venetian Macao Resort-Hotel (the largest hotel in Asia)

3. spent more on promoting tourism

Residents of 33 mainland cities are permitted to travel to Macao. Other parts of China require their residents to join a tour group.

Have you ever been to Macao? to Hong Kong?
