China Halts Import of Unsafe Pringles Potato Chips from the US
Pringles chips contain potassium bromate, an additive used in bread to enhance taste.
Excessive potassium bromate could harm human's central nervous systems, blood and kidneys, in addition to being carcinogenic.
The additive is banned in China, the European Union, and down under, but NOT in the United States and Japan.
It seems unauthorized importers brought in some Proctor & Gamble Pringles and tried to sell them.
95 kg were destroyed and further importation stopped.
The products turned up in a duty-free shop in Zhuhai across the bay from Hong Kong.
P&G China said they were sorry and reaffirmed that the chips did not come from their factory in Fujian.
"We have strictly abided by the Chinese authorities' guidelines against the use of potassium bromate in our mainland factory," said a spokesman. "What we imported before did not contain the substance, because they were sourced from a P&G factory in Belgium, and EU food safety criteria are quite similar to China's."
I don't know if I should be sorry for the 200 lbs of chips that were smashed or sorry that Pringles in the US still have potassium bromate in them.
What do you think?
