China Disputes Mattel Recall, Toys are Safe

Submitted by Bill Belew on Wednesday, 12 September 2007No Comment

The General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) says the United States is holding China to a double standard.

China's standard is in line with international standards (ISO8124-3) and the European standard (EN 71-3). However, the United States adds an extra standard.

The world's largest toy maker, Mattel, recalled 848,000 Chinese-made toys, the third time – 85% due to design and 15% because of quality concerns.

Some 675,000 Barbie dolls were also recalled.  Of those nearly 60% meet the U.S. standards.mattel.toys.china.jpg

Fisher Price toys, 90,000 of them, were checked by GAQSIQ and found to meet the American standards.

Uh…America is the customer in this case and for right or wrong…the customer can establish any standard they please, no?

If I were China, I would be so far under the standard that it would be a non-issue.

How about you?
