Communist China?
Socialist China?
How about capitalist China? Especially when it comes to business.
China and Chinese business people are learning how to do business the capitalist way, as in to be sure to capitalize on every opportunity available to make money.
I'm not a communist, don't want to be, never will be if I have my way. But, in an ideal world, communism is as good as socialism is as good as capitalism. In an ideal world.
But where can you find such an animal?
China is fighting capitalism.
1. Officials are using their influence in various sectors to gain power/money. A railway official uses his influence to reserve tickets that he turns over to scalpers and takes a cut during the Lunar New Year Holiday rush.
2. Suppliers demand, the real word is gouge, their shoppers in the face of the worst winter storms in 50 years. Chinese are thinking, 'where's Global Warming when you need it?'
3. Hotels and inns benefit from profiteering during peak seasons of travel.
4. Restaurants raise prices, minimally perhaps, but when multiplied by 200 million travelers and 2 dishes per traveler per meal. And, what about the other one billion Chinese who just want to dine out for the holidays. What's one billion times 5-10 dishes time a one yuan price increase per dish?
Influence, gouging, profiteering, price hikes…
Ah, capitalism at its best, eh?
