US Familiarity With China Increases

Submitted by Bill Belew on Monday, 1 May 2006No Comment

Americans are becoming more familiar with China and US-China relations.

10 years ago about 18% of the general public was somewhat familiar with US-China relations. Last year more than 3 times that many people or around 60% of Americans were somewhat or very familiar with relations between the two countries.

Nearly ALL opinion leaders have some idea of what is going on. They’d better!

This is a far cry from people who used to think that Japan, Korea and China was all one big glob that was ‘over there’. I don’t how many times my Japanese/American kids have been asked, ‘do you speak Chinese?" and my Chinese wife has been asked "do you speak Japanese, too?"

Americans are getting smarter, but we still have a long way to go.

What do you think?

Statistics come from the Committee of 100 Annual Survey.

This is not suprising to me at all. The world is much “smaller” then it was 20-30 years ago. With advances in travel, in eduication and of course the internet, we seam to be more informed about different cultures across the world. The Asian culture inparticular because there is such a large population in the bay area.

Good points about travel, education and the Internet.
Suddenly not only is there more familiarity, there is also interest and opportunity.

Amercians seem to become more and more knowledgable about China. However, my experience has revealed that people from the US are still taking an enthnocentric view towards China. (i.e. China is still a communist country and the institutional environment is too turbulent)

Knowledgeable and familiar are not the same. But at least Americans are making steps in the right direction.

Its great to hear that Americans are doing more to be aware of other cultures around the world. However, I still hear people refering to people as the wrong nationality. Not only to those from China and Japanbut from everywhere. Amreicans are still ignorant, but as long as were working on it.. i suppose that will do.
