Losing Business in China

Submitted by Bill Belew on Monday, 27 March 2006No Comment

According to some, it is US manufacturing that has lead the world in productive gains and drove living standards higher.

I am not smart enough to understand all of that, but what I do know is that I read recently that China has lost more manufacturing jobs than America since 2000 – something like 4.5 million to 3.1 million.  But, did this report mention that China has more than 4 times the population of the US?

Uh, no.

So, does China have more to lose?

Uh, yeah.

It is possible that there be productivity gains despite job losses?

Of the top ten industrialized economies (US, Japan. Germany, China, Britain, France, Italy, Korea, Canada and Mexico) that represent 75% of the world’s manufacturing output, three of them are in Asia.

Of those ten, only one did not lose factory jobs since 2000.  Italy.

Bummer! I so wanted it to be an Asian country. But then you can’t win them all, can you?
