Hugo Shong of IDG Predicts the Future of Mobile China

Posted by Bill Belew on May 9th, 2006 in China | No Comments

Hugo Shong is the Executive Vice President of IDG and General Partner of IDG – Accel China Fund.

He recently spoke at the Committee of 100 15th annual conference on which business/field he thinks China will take the world lead.

China came online only 8 years ago by simply putting contents of newspapers online and making it available.

SINA was the 1st national newspaper and is now being pursued by GOOGLE and Alibaba. (Different story.)

In 2001, Sina nearly went belly up – the naked winter it was called. What saved Sina, according to Shong was the mobile platform.

China will ltake the world lead on the mobile side, he thinks. (I think this is entirely possible…but percentage-wise, Japan will be real hard to beat.)

What do you think?

China is taking over the world market. Japan is doing the same, but quietly and with better quality.

There are more ways to win a fight than to fight, eh?
