China Learns Diplomacy
Ambassador Barshefsky helped write the document China signed when they joined the WTO.
Recently she shared some of her thoughts about China and China’s new attempts at diplomacy. I wonder if you agree with what she thinks of China and if you think China’s diplomatic approach is effective.
China, she says, has an overriding policy of "partnership, cooperation and mutual benefit."
Sounds good, eh? This policy, she says, is what affects Chinese diplomatic relations.
China does NOT mix politics and economics….
1. China doesn’t feel it necessary to impose artifical constraints on trading partners – even rogue regimes.
2. China does not allow for distractions – that is, it chooses to not intefere with others internal policies.
3. China is able to practice hot/cold relations. They are able to maintain hot relations in business though they are cold to one another politically. She cited Japan as the example. Indeed.
Partnership…cooperation….mutual benefit….
Great buzz words, but aren’t there some things that are more important? I think so.
How about truth, justice…..
