China Will Build World’s Largest Radio Telescope
Is there anything that China does NOT want to be the number one at?
China is now planning to build a 500 meter (that's 5.5 football fields) aperature spherical telescope (FAST).
The spherical reflector is expected to have 4,600 panels and occupy the space of 25 foot ballfields.
And, what will they be looking/listening for?
So far astronomists have observed only 1,760 pulsars. This bugger will be able to find 7,000 to 10,000 each year…IF people can write them down that fast.
Also, China hopes to track satellites and space debris. JUst how much garbage is there is space to be tracked, I wonder?
The deadline for completion of this FAST project is 2013.
Jody Foster will surely be proud to know that someone is looking around in all that 'wasted space.'

The rise of China presents new economic, political and social realities that demand greater U.S. engagement at every level. As the foundation of that engagement, we urgently need to raise the number of Americans who can demonstrate a functional proficiency in Chinese.
China ’s tremendous economic growth creates new opportunities and challenges for U.S. businesses. Between 1978 and 2002, China’s annual GDP growth reached 9.4%, three times the world’s average, and in recent years (2001-2004) China accounted for one third of global economic growth.
