Warner Bros Pulls Out of Chinese Mainland
Warner Brothers has decided to withdraw from the cinema business in mainland China because regulatory restrictions will not let the company have control of its domestic joint ventures.
New laws issued by the Chinese government last year require that investors in China have a 51% ownership.
This is different from the 2003 regulation that allowed overseas investment of up to 75%.
Warner Bros in China (WBIC) box revenue (120 million yuan) was just 6% of the total last year in China.![]()
This smells to me like Google and Yahoo not wanting to be censored but agreeing to abide by Chinese laws. WBIC doesn’t want to be censored and has decided not to play at all.
It seems to me that WBIC ought to bide its time for now, instead of pulling out and starting over later.
What do you think?
