Margaret Chan Becomes First Chinese National to Head UN Specialized Body
Margaret Chan became the first Chinese national to be elected as a heard of a specialized U.N. body when she won the position of chief of the World Health Organization.
Of course, the Chinese government, Macao and Hong Kong are delighted to have one of their own in such a high profile position.
The position is a five-year one and Chan, 59, takes over from Acting director Nordstrom of Sweden who stepped in after South Korean Dr. Lee died suddenly.![]()
China and the Chinese, indeed, must be delighted to have someone in a position such as this.
China has not always been the negotiator or political savvy. Margaret Chan will have her hands full dealing with the many health issues in the world…and the many representatives of these countries.
It will be interesting to watch how she handles it.
What do you think?
