Google – Four Years to Find a Name

Posted by Bill Belew on April 14th, 2006 in Business in China | No Comments

Before Google  decided to do business in China, they needed to come up with a name. And that took four years. Four years to name its, um, baby.

The Chinese don’t have the sound…goo, like what a baby says, or gle as in a sea gull. So, they have to come up with something closer.

Until now, google has been called gou gou in Chinese, which means, little doggie…not puppy, but little doggie. This is not a bad name because you have the "little doggie" go fetch, right?

Well, now they have a new name….

谷歌

Some say this means "harvest song", but when I typed it in, I had to use a Japanese word processor…and I typed in valley and song. So, I think it means more like a valley song…whatever that is.

At any rate, Google will soon have offices in Russia and in China. Is there one in India yet? Hmmm.

Google knows how to do business in China…respect the local law (fold to censoring requirements) and culture (find a Chinese name).

Will it succeed?

What do you think?
