There’s a reason why businessmen, salesemen and the like need to know their Asian customers.
There’s the story of a Coca Cola salesman who returned from the Middle East without any success whatsoever.
A friend asked him about it. “So, why weren’t you successful?”
The salesman explained, “At first, I was pretty confident of making inroads because Coca Cola is for all intents and purposes unknown in the region. My problem, however, was I didn’t know the language. So, I decided to make my presentation through posters.
His friend replied, “Sounds reasonable to me. What were the posters like?”
The salesman continued – “The first poster had a man lying in the hot desert sand, exhausted.
“The second poster – a man drinking Coca Cola.
“The third poster – the man refreshed and running along.
“And we posted them everywhere like this.
“Seems like a good strategy to me. Should have worked quite well, no?”
“No, indeed! How was I to know that in the Middle East that they read from right to left?!”
