Two doctors arrested in AMRI case in Kolkata
After the tragic deaths due to fire at the AMRI hospital in Kolkata, two of the top doctors from the city have been held over the issue. On December 9, 2011 fire broke out at the basement of the hospital which claimed more than 90 lives including the hospital staff.
Most of the patients died of toxic smoke which travelled to the upper floors of the hospital. Dr. Mani Chettri and Dr. Pranab Dasgupta have been arrested on January 27, 2012 and were the members of the AMRI board.
The doctors were questioned at the police headquarters and were later arrested. So far thirteen people have been arrested in the case. The people who were arrested included four staff members and none board members.
But earlier this month industry lobby FICCI requested the government of West Bengal to release the AMRI hospital directors. But Chief minister Mamata Banerjee rejected the request and said that the law would take its own course in the case. Banerjee at a press conference said that they do not want an industry which kills people.
