Kojagiri Purnima (full moon) or Poornima will be celebrated today that is Friday, October 22, 2010 in many parts of India. Mainly Bengalis and Marathi people celebrate this festival.

According to the Hindu mythology, during Kojagiri Purnima, Goddess Laxmi is worshipped. It is said that Lakshmi blesses with peace and prosperity on this particular night.

Basically, Kojagiri Purnima marks the end of monsoon season. This puja is also known as Kaumudi puja and also Sharad Purnima. The ritual is that people stay awake throughout the night and sing praises through ‘Bhajans’ and ‘Stotras’ of Goddess Lakshmi.

There is also another part to the story. It says, Lakshmi blesses only those people, who stay awake. She even asks, ‘Kojagarti’ that literally means, ‘Who is awake’?

People in many parts of the country observe fast throughout the day and mainly consume milk and fruit juices.
