Is Hong Kong Better or Worse Since 1997
The Committee of 100 survey that I have mentioned here in the past asked the question of the American general public and American opinion leaders -
Is Hong Kong better or worse since the 1997 handover?
About one in five of the general public think it is better (I wonder how many of them have been there….) whereas one in six of the opinion leaders thought Hong Kong was better off.
However….one in three of the general public thought that Hong Kong was worse off now and nearly half of all opinion leaders (46%) thought Hong Kong has gone downhill.
Regardless…the perception is that Hong Kong has been hurt significantly since it was returned to the mainland.
I wonder if this is true or not.

That makes sense.
It does seem that the Hong Kongese have it better off now than before.
But the English do not…
Still, the perception is that they don’t.
People need to be educated…especially here in the US. Too many Americans form opinions with no knowledge. Hopefully this kind of exchange will educate a few.

HongKong back to China, the HongKong is better since 1997 for Chinese. There is no more tax/money earned from Hongkong for British/English people since 1997, it is w…or..se for them. The living standard is kept the same after and before 1997 for HongKong people, and got mainland support behand HongKong people economically. As well as the protection from mainliand army. It’s better for HongKong resident. Don’t you agree, Mr. panasianbiz?

What is better for the Hong Kongese and what is worse for the English?

The answer to whether HK is better or worst is indicated by the number of people migrated to Canada before 1997 and how many now returned to HK after they realized it is still better to stay. These returnees suffer great lost in properties sales both way, yet they return. Why?

It’s a very tricky question and there’s no absolute “yes” or “no” answers to it. It depends on individual’s situation now and then as well as what criteria you apply and what aspects you are looking at.
Maybe the question should be extended as—Is Hong Kong Better or Worse Since 1997? In what ways? Why and why not?

It’s false. I asked several common people the same question when I was in HK, and nobody said their lives’re worse after 1997.
