Butterflies Get Right-of-way on Highway
The milkweed butterflies are indigenous to Taiwan. Every March they move enmasse, about 2 million enmasse, from the southern part of the island to the north.
Consequently, Taiwan will close down a 600 meter stretch of highway, hang large nets so the butterflies can butterfly higher and avoid enmasse extinction.
The country will also install ultraviolet lights to guide the little insects across a highway overpass.![]()
All…this for butterflies?
The little guys make the 300 kilometer journey once a year. Once in the north, they lay eggs and die. In November, the new butterflies head south to escape winter.
Apparently, Taiwan has seen a butter fly, a butter fly…a butter fly…and wants them to keep doing it.
My wife has six pictures of butterflies on our wall…none of them milkweeds. Maybe she will go to Taiwan for the migration and bring us back a real one.
Do you like butterflies?
