The Great Rat Wall of China to be Erected

Blame it on the humans.

Ecological damage caused by intense human activity near a lake in China was a factor that prompted a rat invasion…a several million rat invasion!

2.25 million were killed and weighed about 90 tons.

But, that was nothing compared to the estimated 2 billion that invaded 22 counties surrounding Dongting lake after floods caused the rats to go on the move.

The answer – The Great Rat Wall – visible from overflying aircraft.

Still…a 40km (25 mile) wall is a lot of wall. Think…far enough to stretch across the Grand Canyon.

If something isn't done, 10 million hectares of crops

 

could be ruined by the little pests.

If they are fed, the rodents could grow into a good field mouse size and become dinner. Anybody thought of that?

The wall will be one meter high and is one way, ditches and poison are others, to keep the mickeys away.

About one thousand cats died in a nearby village when they ate rats that were poisoned.

Bringing in the owls and snakes is another idea…but there aren't enough to go around…birds and reptiles that is.

It's a mess when humans get in the way of the food cycle, no.

I learned about this very phenomenon when visiting San Francisco's Exploratorium….second floor.
