7 Reasons Why China Will Produce 80,000 Minutes of Cartoons This Year

China will produce 80,000 minutes of cartoons this year, nearly double the 42,700 minutes produced last year.

In the first ten months of this year, China's cartoon output surpassed all of last year AND the total number of minutes from 1993-2003!

There are reasons for this dramatic rise in output -

1. Private capital has been allowed in the animation industry since 2005

2. 15 national animation bases have been established

3. The state Administration of Radio, Film and Television has approved three cartoon channels in Beijing, Shanghai and Hunan.

4. SARFT has approved more than 30 kids' channels

5. Animation schools have been established in Beijing and Jilin.

6. SARFT banned foreign cartoons from prime time (5-8pm) beginning Sept. 1st.

7. A campaign begun in 2004 set a goal of 60 percent of all cartoons shown on Chinese TV to be Chinese made.

Still, Japanese cartoons are the most popular with China's 250 million youngsters. But, if China will stay with it, be more original and come up with good story lines, they will catch up with Japan….if for no other reason, then because the government says so.
