Wal-Mart Is Knocking On Heaven’s Door – In India

Submitted by Bill Belew on Tuesday, 2 May 2006No Comment

Wal-mart has its eyes on India….and everywhere else in the world for that matter.

Currently, India does NOT allow foreign retail chains. When Bush went calling last month, Wal-Mart officials went along…much like Lenovo came a calling and a buying when President Hu came to the US this month.

Walmart wants to set up a liaison office in New Delhi to lobby, er…to do market research. But local mom and pop retailers have the same objections in India that their counterparts have here in the states.

Wal-mart has been sourcing goods from India since 2001. And as some say the cost of wages go up in China, it makes sens that India will becomes the reasonable alternative for cheap labor.

Biyani ($450 million in annual revenue) and Reliance Petrochemical (1,000 hypermarkets on tap) consider themselves rivals of the yet to arrive Wal-mart.

Bummer! People hate the company and it’s not even there yet.

But, it will be in India, in time…to do business, outsource more work or both.

What do you think?

Wal-Mart has been a big help in america. Before Wal-mart were did country bumkins get their daughters cheep knock off clothes. But seriously folks, the gap between rich and poor in india is huge. Wal-mart will not only provide products at a price that is nice, but will provide jobs. Wal-mart will be a great addition to india’s economy.

Wal-Mart needs to stop where they are. They have already taken most of the US up. They have put many small business in the hole. Wal-Mart is not liked by the small business owners here in the US. And India must likely hates us like the rest of the world. Now we are trying to change them again. Since the pecentage of small business compared to corporate is higher in India than in the US, It will put too many people out of business and their will not be enough spots to employ them all. I think that we should stop trying to do things in other countries and start trying to fix here first.

I am not really sure if the loser is indeed the rest of the world. Though that is the case, the move that Walmart took in order to gain shares is not a justified one. Outsourcing or Offshoring manufacturing tasks to China is a serious matter and should not be done in a whim.

Walmart excites passion (good and bad) in many people. I don’t know if Wal-mart is good or bad, but since Sam Walton started the company, things sure are different.

This is a shame. I hope they don’t get admission to enter the Indian retail sector.

I am here in North America since the past 1 and a half years. If I had been in India, I too would be welcoming Walmart with open arms and falsely thinking of such a move as India’s progress and boon. Sadly that is not the case at all. Walmart is one of the most hated corporations in the world, America included. I did a research on corporate ethics and it was based on walmart. People say that atleast Biharis will disappear and we will get more organised. Even though it might be true to a certain extent, where will those people go. So many people depend on those small scale shops for their livelihood. Those shops don’t just feed the person who owns the business but his/her whole family and also families of boys working in those stores. Do you think they will get jobs at Walmart.

I would welcome Walmart but only if one condition is met.

They should agree to source 90% of their products from India and not some cheap knockoffs from China. If this happens, other avenues (manufacturing industry) will benefit directly and will be a boon for us. Other than that, I don’t see any reason why we should be making another big American corporation any richer than it already is.

That’s a great idea about Wal-Mart doing everything inside India…and India might be the one place that can do things cheaper than China, no?

In any event, Wal-Mart is a company that everyone reckons with..even countries.

Thanks for reading and for leaving a comment.
