Ultrareach – Playing Cat and Mouse – Chinese style

Submitted by Bill Belew on Friday, 31 March 2006No Comment

Yesterday I wrote about Dynamic Internet Technology and their attempt to combat the Chinese cybercops. It makes us wonder who are the good guys and who are the bad guys, doesn’t it?

There is another group. Ultreach.

What these groups do is help censored organizations such as Voice of America establish proxy sites which use uncensored addresses but provide the same content.

DIT and Ultrareach send out mass e-mails telling their subscribers, Chinese web-surfers, what these uncensored addresses are.

Furthermore, DIT and Ultrareach create a secure connection for each visitor so the visitor can peruse the NET freely.

Finally, China’s censors find these temporary sites, as quickly as within one day and sometimes hours, and then shut them out.

So, what’s the big deal? And what does this have to do with doing business in China?

Can it be possible to do business without having all the ‘correct’ political info? Isn’t that how we do it here in the US all the time?

I believe in freedom of speech, freedom of expression. But, I don’t know whether or not I need to know my business partners’ political views in order to do business with him or her. Do I?

What do you think?
