JETRO
China Confidential, one of my guest bloggers recently wrote about a report put out by JETRO that announced that Japan’s investment in China set a new record at $6.5 Billion in 2005 up nearly 20% from a year earlier.
This is largely due to Japanese car makers, like TOYOTA and HONDA building new manufacturing facilities in China.
There has always and will likely continue to be bad blood between these two countries for a long to come (perhaps I will explain about that in a future blog)…but China doesn’t seem to be shy about accepting Japan’s investments, now does it?
It was almost one year ago that very anti-Japanese protests were staged in Beijing and Shanghai. (Some say it was partly instigated by Beijing).
Even so, Japan keeps pouring ‘good will’ into the country and China keeps accepting it.
Is this good or bad?
What do you think?
It’s complicated: Chinese hate Japanese because of the past, but they love their products because of the customized features geared towards Chinese, and of course, the low prices. However, if they have a choice, say same product, same price, one made in the US, one made in Japan, they’d surely choose the USA product without any doubts.
You are right. Japan and China and Korea for that matter have very bad blood.
But I am not sure that the Chinese would so eagerly buy the American product. The US would also have to match the quality and appeal.
The US expects the world to fall in love with its products whereas other countries try to cater to the culture of the market they are trying to get into.
Would you agree?
