Beijing Olympic Officials Lack Sense of Humor

Submitted by Bill Belew on Thursday, 18 January 2007No Comment

The 2008 Olympic emblem "Dancing Beijing" was morphed into 'male' and 'female' symbols commonly placed on public toilet doors.

The four animal mascots and Olympic flame had their heads replaced with Japanese cartoon heroes, Chinese super girl finalists and star football player, David Beckham.

The Beijing Olympic Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) was not amused.

1. It is "tarnishing the Olympic Spirit."

2. "It's a rights violation that contravenes our country's laws and regulations."

3. "We hold the right to carry out legal action against such offenders."

Spoofs have become somewhat of a trend in China with Chinese history and popular culture being poked fun at.

However, "China's State Administration for Radio, Film and Television announced it was preparing legislation banning the creation of unauthorized short films that mock officially approved culture."

Talk about not having a sense of humor…

What would they do if people in other countries wanted to 'have some fun?' It is well know what radical Muslims will do.

What do you think?

Well, in China, you gotta to be serious on this national issue. It is a matter of a country’s face. Actually, as a Chinese, I don’t care that much. I guess it is because that all the “big people” are too old to accept the new trend. Anyway, the young spirit is becoming more and more powerful now, no one can stop what’s going on inside.

But are the Olympics a “national” issue? Or a Beijing issue?

You are right, once the young people taste freedom of speech, it will be hard to take it away.

Yes, every Chinese should take part in this big event. That’s what they’ve told us, and it is now happening. Labor, money are pouring to Beijing and I remember there is a notice that no villagers(Mingong) will be allowed to go to Beijing during Olympics time. Ridiculous, waste of money, that’s what I think. Maybe these labor and money should be used in solving the environment problem.
