Russian Sub Stakes Claim to North Pole
At least one country is hoping the global warming phenomenon will continue – Russia.
A Russian Submarine planted a rust-proof titanium flag painted with the Russian tricolor onto the Arctic seabed at a depth of 4,261 meter (14,000').
Russia hopes that vast reserves of untapped oil and natural gas will become more accessible as the climate changes and the ice melts.![]()
Canada, Norway, Denmark and the United States are thinking, "Who are the Russians kidding?"
International law allows these countries a 200
mile economic zone around the north of their coastline.
Russia thinks the Arctic seabead is theirs because Siberia and the North Pole are linked by one continental shelf.
If that's true, and you go deep enough, then the whole world is mine starting from my little post-card-sized piece of land in Sunnyvale. No?
It would seem to me, however, if the Russians or anybody for that matter can get the gas and oil out from under the North Pole, well then, they can have it.
What do you think?
