Russia is proud of the fact that Sputnik meant they were the first to be in space.

And they should be proud.

But, what has happened since? Are they celebrating a moment of glory? Is it a one-hit-wonder kind of thing?

I did something remarkable about 50 years ago…I was born and have survived.

Seems, Russia is intent on just surviving, too.

I visited Moscow in the '80s and a friend took me to the museum of glories or somethiing like that on the outskirts of Moscow.

All of Russia's 'pride and joy' was on display. TVs and stereos that looked like they were from the 50s in the U.S. Refrigerators and everything else looked equally ancient – but it was the country's 'pride.'

Then, we walked into the space room – magnificent indeed. My eyes bulged and I remembered that Russia was first, they had set the standard, America was for a while forced to play catch up.

I was thinking to myself, Russia is indeed second to none when it comes to space. As I turned to offer praise for Russia's accomplishment to my Russian friend, he spoke first - 

"Yeah, Russia can send a man into space, but they still can't feed us."

Putin has announced that Russia will put another man on the moon by 2025 and to send a probe to Mars.

But, can he feed the people before they go?
