China Busy Entertaining Big Wigs – ROK President Heading to PRC

Japan’s new PM, Abe Shinzo, will visit China on Oct. 8th and 9th. Just as quickly as they can get the tables cleared and the new chopsticks out President Roh Moo-hyun of Korea (ROK) will pay a working visit on Oct. 13th.

This is the second time for President Roh to visit, the first more thand 3 years ago, when China and ROK agreed to an all-around cooperative partnership.

The areas of cooperation include:

1. politics

2. economy

3. trade

4. culture

5. education

6. science and technology

7. environmental protection

8. military

In November of 2005, President Hu visited Korea and the acknowledged one another’s smooth cooperation.

The bottom line, however, is the goal to double the volume of bilateral trade to $200 million from the $100 million in 2005.

In the end, countries just want to buy and hopefully sell more to one another. Is that all there is to good relations?

What do you think?

Between Roh’s incipient anti-americanism, and corollary “never met an asian dictatorship he didn’t like” attitude, combined with his overall staggering incompetence as a head of state, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up with a deal that falls just short of reinstating the kowtow.
