Human Bone Factory Uncovered in India

Submitted by Bill Belew on Wednesday, 20 June 2007No Comment

Human bones are used by some followers of a Tibetan school of Buddhism.

Bones, we won't ask where they come from, particularly the skull and thigh bones can last a lifetime. The question is "Who's lifetime?" The original owner of the bones or the religious organization that gets them after the fact.

Indian police have come across a stash of hundreds of human skulls and thigh bones. Hundreds…meaning lots of places were hoping to get their hands on them. Thigh bones are used as blow-horns. The skulls are used as cups in religious ceremonies.

And we thought that was just

an Indiana Jones thing.

It is the second cache of bones found in eastern India since April.

The bones appear to have originated in Varanasi, a Hindu holy city in northern India where people, lots and lots of them, are cremated on the banks of the Ganges River.

And holy as in Holy Cow! people actually steal bones and then try to smuggle them out…in the name of religion?!

Eastern India used to be a thriving center for the export of human skeletons until the federal government forced the trade underground.

One villager said he plucked bodies from the river that were abandoned by the poor who did not have enough money to buy wood to perform a proper cremation.

The longer I live, the more I realize how much I have NOT heard of before.

A business…out of selling human bones…for religious purposes.

What's the strangest religious act you have ever heard of?

FollyWood would be a better description.

Just as the ancient Rome. people today need bread and circus. The governments supply the bread, and the media supplies the circus, where you are both the audience and participating animals.
