Toyota Overtakes GM in China

Submitted by Bill Belew on Sunday, 28 May 2006No Comment

Toyota will overtake GM as the number one car maker in the world sometime this year.

Toyota is building factories; GM is closing them down….Toyota…Toyota…Toyota… I am sure GM is tired of the word.

Well, they are about to grow a whole lot more tired of it.

GM is the number one foreign car maker in China with 11% of the market there. VW is number 2.

But…but…Toyota just rolled out its first made-in-China Camry. Made in Toyota’s new $475 million factory in Nansha near Guangzhou.

The Camry is the US number one best seller. China used to think that Toyotas were pricey but have since been won over by the reputation for reliable, fuel-efficiency of the Camry. Isn’t that how Toyota wins over the most?

The Camry was already the lead import model in China over the past 10 years. Now that it is closer to its consumers there, Toyota expects sales to zoom. Last year they were already up 55%. What will happen this year with the factory right down the street?

GM is about to grow a whole lot more tired of hearing the name Toyota.

What do you think?

the gas is more and more expensive now, and the price of cars are more and more cheap. so when we plan to buy a car, we will consider the cost of maintaining a car. as to the point, the Japanese cars were figured economier than US cars.
but i believe the security is the most important. after all, the blood is more expensiver than the gas, isn’t it? so , i wont choose the Japanese car.

    Great point, June…

Safety is, of course, most important.

Especially in the US where there are so MANY BIG cars.

Thank you for reading and leaving a comment.

toyota just has a much better reliability and quality rating than GM. they are known for it. GM really has to step up and improve their cars if they want any shot at holding the market in their favor. and they should stop making cars that, with only a few exceptions, are so ugly. that might help too.

It looks like toyota has gained more customers through the quality of their cars. Toyotas do last for a long time so even if they are expensive, you save a lot of money on maintenence.
